After two minutes, everyone shares their answers.(Hit “restart” if you want a different letter.) (You can access the “Share Screen” option by clicking on the green arrow at the bottom of your video or by clicking the Zoom icon in the top right corner of your Mac.) They’ll then share their screen so you’re all looking at the same list. Have one person go to Swellfargo’s Scattergories game or a site.If you need a crash course in Zoom Scattegories: Screen-sharing Edition, here’s how you can play: Just make sure everyone has a piece of paper, a pencil, and the propensity to tell the truth about their answers. (If you don’t like that layout, there’s an alternate design.) You’ll need to share your screen for this one if you want to play it on Zoom. My personal favorite is this Scattergories list generator from Swellgarfo. There are a handful of different versions of Scattegories online. Here are five ways you can play Scattergories over Zoom with your friends. Or ignore rules you don’t want to abide by like repeating words. You can also make up your own rules - I like to award bonus points for creativity. No repeating words (e.g., no using orange for “colors that start with O” and “fruit that starts with O”).No adding an adjective before a word to make it work with the letter (e.g., Blue Toyota for “cars that start with B”).Prepare to argue about who counts as a celebrity and how creative you can get with the names of colors. If someone else has the same word as you, neither of you gets the point. You get a point for each original answer. Each answer needs to start with the designated letter. Then, you fill out a list with random categories like actors, colors, or things you find in a zoo. If you’re unfamiliar or need a refresher, Scattergories is a word game where you roll a giant die with letters on each side. If you and your friends crave inconsequential competition - my favorite kind - Scattergories is the low-stakes drama you seek. If nothing else, it’ll awaken the nostalgic part of your brain. That way no one has to watch the sand run out.Looking for a way to liven up your Zoom calls? Need a game to play during your next virtual happy hour? Sick of just staring at your friends’ faces during your video chat catch-ups? (Our daily routines have been the same for 12 months so everyone is more than caught-up.) Fear not, for you can play Scattergories on Zoom. Keep in mind that you can always use a wind-up timer if you don’t like the manual one. I don’t list prices because they can change. Have you considered a newer version of Scattergories instead of making new cards? The newer versions are far less expensive than the vintage game. Brand new originals are going for big bucks. Take a look at one of the new version of Scattergories. Even newer versions have some of the same old lists. I wasn’t able to find new category cards for the old version of Scattergories. Scattergories Refills The Newer Version of Scattergories is a Blast I wasn’t able to find new category cards for the old version of Scattergories, but it was easy enough to make my own. It’s a great gift for people that love word games. It can be hilarious too! It’s an activity that makes people think, but it isn’t a game that causes arguments or headaches. It often sparks fun and interesting family discussions. Each person reads off their answers one by one. It’s also a great way to get family members talking at holiday gatherings. However, it’s not your typical board game since it takes thought and creativity. Kids just learning to spell, seniors and everyone in between can play this fun family board game. It’s one of the best games for family gatherings since several people can play. You don’t have to be a good speller let alone an English major to enjoy this game. It’s like having a brand new game!Īs you might have guessed, Scattergories is at the top of my list. Instead, I made new ones myself using the existing design and heavy cardstock. I find myself using the same answers multiple times. I recently searched for new Scattergories cards for the old game, but I couldn’t find them. After playing with my sister for the past several years, I’ve just about memorized the cards. Are you wondering if you can buy new category cards for the old version of Scattergories? The original version is from 1988, and it was made by Although 20 letters can be used to fill in existing lists, new options would be great.

While there is undoubtedly a great deal of pressure for Prinsloo to get back into fighting form after giving birth, the numerous photo sightings of Prinsloo sporting sexy yoga pants while hitting up the gym have proven that she will surely bounce back. The pair were married and welcomed their first child in September 2016. Lead singer of Maroon 5, Adam Levine, was well on the way to becoming the next Leonardo DiCaprio in regards to his love of models, but Prinsloo was able to steal his heart. While there were some that became familiar with Prinsloo for her stellar good looks and undeniable sex appeal, others became acquainted with this Namibian model after the controversy regarding the circumstances behind meeting her husband. Check out our list of the 15 times Victoria’s Secret models rocked yoga pants both on and off the glossy pages of the catalog, and see how this fitness product can be even sexier than the signature brand’s lingerie.īehati Prinsloo is a Victoria’s Secret model that actually started off with the PINK fitness and lounge brand prior to moving on to become a full-on Angel. From the sexy cut sports bras to the matching yoga pants, the form-fitting products help to accentuate all the right curves in all the right places. While the sexy teddies and bra and panty sets are definitely a great part of the catalog, sometimes it’s the fitness apparel that makes the most impact. Victoria’s Secret models often come under fire for their impossible standards set for the female form, but it’s hard to deny that the lingerie and fitness apparel looks much more appealing when sported by some of the most beautiful women in the world. When picking out a pair of great quality yoga pants, who better to fully exemplify how they should look on the female form than the women that endorse them in the Victoria’s Secret catalog? Yet, just as not all yoga pants are made the same, not all women are made the same either. The 1964 French film Cherchez l'idole, released in English as The Chase, was the film that spearheaded the Idol Singer movement in Japan and what defined idols as a whole. The other wiki has more information about the history of idol singers. Do not confuse with the singer Billy Idol. The Western equivalent of this trope is a Teen Idol, which may overlap. If an idol is a villain in a Superhero or Magic Idol Singer show, they might be an Evil Diva. During The New '10s, the Idol Singer trope collided with the anime industry to form the Idol Genre, always on the lookout for new trends to sell Moe merchandise and Dating Sim games.Īnd yes, Idol Singer has crossbred with Heavy Metal to form the kawaii metal genre ( BABYMETAL anyone?) However, a comparable equivalent in the West is the Disney Channel due to holding a similar image that idol singers are expected to portray. Westerners are more likely to find the way they are marketed as exploitative and are often shocked by how strict their Contractual Purity clause is. Some fans may get possessive and believe idols should be Married to the Job, which may lead to Yoko Ohno if a dating scandal happens.Īs the Idol Singer trope is more prevalent in Japan and South Korea, there is Values Dissonance involved in the fan culture and how the performers are marketed. Idols are specifically marketed to create a strong emotional connection with their consumer fan base for the sake of buying their merchandise, and in doing so, fans are viewed as loyal supporters who carry them throughout their career. The relationship between idols and their fans is also a notable feature, as their longevity is co-dependent on each other. Some idols move onto becoming serious actors and singers, while the less successful ones end up becoming a Former Child Star. Most idols change careers after the age of 25 due to the industry valuing freshness and youth. Idol companies are known to ruthlessly discard their talents after a few years of cranking out formulaic hits for any reason they want, or bind them in long contracts. While this level of control has loosened somewhat with the growing impact of social media, which allows idols to interact with fans more casually, as well as a Japanese court decision that effectively rendered the "no dating" clauses of idol contracts unenforceable (it's still very in-force in Korea, however), the industry has been slow to overturn its most problematic and exploitative elements. Most are tightly controlled by their producers and expected to maintain a public image of purity and innocence for brand and marketing purposes through Contractual Purity. There has been a shift towards "mega-groups" due to them being more financially successful than solo singers. The concept and marketing model for idols originated from Japanese Pop Music but has also appeared in Korean Pop Music since the 1990s. As such, most of their public appearances picture show them as charming or having tons of fun. Their objective is to "sell dreams", which basically means to entertain and be the healing balm that relieves people from the anxiety and stress from their daily lives. As such, a core part of the "idol aesthetic", so to speak, is that they are trained to sound like a "normal person" when singing, rather than a trained, professional singer. Idols are intentionally marketed to seem normal and approachable in order to be relatable to their fans and be the underdog that everyone wants to support. Idol singers are recruited through multi-level audition processes, manufactured, and managed by media companies as "products" that are influential in advertising, campaigns, and dramas with their image and music. Much of Asian pop music centers around "idols", entertainers trained in a multitude of performance skills with singing as their primary focus. Just like the girl they chose to voice her. We instantly got along.Įverything that we went through, throughout all the different seasons, with the last season being the most challenging, made us so close. I think I was very lucky when I first met her. Our relationship to each other, onscreen and off, is about friendship. I feel very lucky that the show is about friendship. What has it meant to you to finish this chapter with Christina and working with her, specifically on Season 3? And she's said she leaned on you a lot to help her finish this journey. NOW: Christina has talked a lot about how finishing filming the final season of Dead to Me was challenging after her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2021. We just love being on- and offscreen together. So once we understood that tone, which came pretty naturally to us, it all sort of just happened, and the writing is so good. We're laughing and we're crying, and Liz Feldman just goes, "That's the tone!" When you're starting a show, you're finding things along the way because from the page to the screen, there's a whole lot that happens. It got to such a strange place, where it was funny but also very tragic. I remember in the first season, we did this scene - I can't even remember what scene it was - but we were just laughing. So we had, not only the two of us, but also we had an amazing partner in Liz Feldman because she loves and cares, and the story is so personal to her. When we started in the first season, we were like, "What is, even, this tone?" Like, is it really out there? Is it really small? You're trying to find it. There's all these things that you have to consider. You don't know how people work - if they're loose, if they're very stringent. Then you never know what it's like to work with anybody the first time you go to work. We both are kind of no-BS people, you know? So that was really nice. Like you said, we did not know each other at all. What was it like during Season 1 finding the rhythm of Jen and Judy's friendship while also getting to know each other behind the scenes? THEN: Before you booked Dead to Me, you and Christina had never met before. She shared some of her favorite stories from working on Season 3 and reminisced about the show's beginnings, and we even found time to look back at some of her other iconic movie and TV roles. So to celebrate the final season of Dead to Me, Linda sat down with me to discuss bringing this chapter of her life to a close. Most recently, she's probably best known for playing Judy Hale in the hilarious Netflix series Dead to Me, a story she describes as being about "grief, loss, forgiveness, and friendship." The role earned her a much-deserved Emmy nomination and has cemented her and Christina Applegate as not only a powerhouse acting duo but also the definition of platonic soulmates. From Freaks and Geeks to Legally Blonde to ER to Scooby-Doo to Mad Men to Bloodline to the freakin' Marvel Cinematic Universe and more, Linda has made her mark in every genre and has created some of the most memorable characters around. If you do a quick look at her IMDb, her credits really speak for themselves. Linda Cardellini is an icon when it comes to movies and TV. Researching and Interpreting the Underground Railroad is a National Park Service resource that provides questions, guidance on conducting primary source research, and addresses the limitations of researching this era in U.S. While historians are uncertain about whether or not songs and textiles could have been used to convey secret messages in the Underground Railroad system, they are nonetheless important aspects of African American culture in the 19th century. Similarly, the EDSITEment lesson entitled Stories in Quilts addresses how quilts may have been used to direct slaves toward stations of safe passage. For more information about other songs from this era, visit EDSITEment's Music in African American History lesson. Some believe that songs such as “Follow the Drinking Gourd” was a reference to the Big Dipper and the North Star that led passengers in the direction of free states. However, the Underground Railroad has generated a lot of lore surrounding the signals allies would send to one another. Although the winter could be a dangerous time to flee due to the bitterly cold climate of the north, it also offered much longer periods of darkness under which to take cover.īecause railroad trips took place in secret, there is little documentary evidence of the trips. If daytime travel was unavoidable along the railroad, passengers took up errands and chores to make it appear as though they worked for someone in the area. Freedom-seekers rested during the day and conducted most of their long-distance travel (5-10 miles) at night when they were less likely to be visible. The conductors of the Underground Railroad knew how to take advantage of all possible angles. These vocabulary terms and others- such as personal liberty laws, redemption, and manumission- can be found on the " Language of Slavery” page hosted by the National Park Service. Similarly a person who kept slaves as property is a “slave holder” and not a “slave master” or “slave owner,” since the latter two terms connote a relationship of superiority over other human beings. Refer to this list of historic Underground Railway locations to see if one is in your area.Īccording to the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, the preferred term for an enslaved person running away from bondage toward freedom is a “freedom-seeker.” The terms “fugitive,” “escapee,” or “runaway” all suggest that the person fleeing forced labor was somehow at fault for seeking liberation. While it was harder to for slaves to flee from the most southern states-like Alabama and Mississippi-because they were surrounded by other slave-holding states, nearly every state had some Underground Railroad activity. The facilitators, or conductors, of the Underground Railroad, typically comprised free black persons in the North, formerly escaped slaves, and abolitionists of all backgrounds, such as Thaddeus Stevens, William Still, Thomas Garrett, Isaac Hopper, John Brown, Elijah Anderson, Levi Coffin, and, of course, Harriet Tubman. Chernobylite was released back in September of 2021 for last-gen consoles but recently has been upgraded to take advantage of the Series X/S and PS5. While my own experience is extremely minimal with that franchise, I felt a lot of Fallout 4 and Metro 2033 vibes here in more ways than one. Hell, even the character you are playing as is given the Stalker title. It’s also one that richly fills the void until we finally see the release of the upcoming S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Why he feels that he and everyone at Railton College around him are mediocre has more to do with Hank’s internalized shame than the actual talent (or lack thereof) of those around him. It’s the kind of thing that so many American people would love to have - safety, stability, support - but rather than being grateful, Hank’s focused on what he doesn’t have. Hank, in contrast with the lonely Jimmy McGill, has a good marriage and, it seems like, a decent relationship with his kid. He’s tired because of his own complacency. But it doesn’t seem like Hank has been disparaged by anything particularly troubling. The character is beaten down by life, not unlike Jimmy McGill after his time as Saul Goodman. And so, he got his own show.īob Odenkirk’s performance as Hank Devereaux is also interesting enough to warrant an entire show about this very average man. Exploitative in nature but somehow strangely likable and funny, Saul Goodman was the kind of character that people just wanted to see more of. Better Call Saul would not have existed had Odenkirk not made Saul Goodman such an interesting character. Saul Goodman was first introduced to audiences in Breaking Bad - another one of the best television shows of all time. Odenkirk was nominated for six Emmys for his performance as Saul Goodman / Jimmy McGill, and while he didn’t win any, it was truly an outstanding television show, led by Odenkirk’s performance. Better Call Saul, which ran from 2015-2022, was one of the best television shows of recent years. You can’t talk about Bob Odenkirk on a new television series without talking about the legendary character, Saul Goodman. He’s now a man (slightly) unburdened, his true thoughts no longer shelved. The young student that Hank insulted most directly in his outburst, Bartow (Jackson Kelly), demands an apology, and rather than saying what he needs to say to move along and keep his job security, Hank doubles down on what he said and refuses to apologize. When his students pressure him to say something, he gives them his honest feedback - that Railton College is “mediocrity’s capital.” While not a planned outburst, this shakes things up in a way that Hank has been craving. We meet him as he stares blankly across his college campus and enters a classroom to be absolutely pummeled by a student’s terrible writing. Hank - Henry Devereaux Jr., to be exact - is grumpy. While not all AMC series may quite live up to that gold standard, judging from the pilot episode alone, Lucky Hank very well might join those ranks. I’ve written before about the kind of quality that we’ve come to expect from AMC - character-driven stories that feature excellent settings and really build full, believable worlds for our characters to live in. Lucky Hank comes from co-showrunners Aaron Zelman ( The Killing) and Paul Lieberstein ( The Office), along with a team of executive producers that include Bob Odenkirk, Richard Russo, and Mark Johnson (who also produced Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul). The drama / comedy stars Bob Odenkirk as Hank and Mireille Enos as his wife Lily. The eight-episode series is based on the 1997 novel Straight Man by Richard Russo, and it follows an English professor at a rural Pennsylvania college as he grapples with middle-aged insecurity and boredom. Lucky Hank is about a perfectly average man and his midlife crisis. This discussion and review of the Lucky Hank premiere episode on AMC contains some light spoilers. |
